Ever since I was a little girl I was always curious about science and nature. As I grew, that natural curiosity has turned into a way of life. Gardening.
Growing up, my parents had all types of gardens. Vegetable gardens, annual gardens, perennial gardens, indoor plants and trees. The most memorable were our vegetable gardens. I grew up on fresh salsa straight from the backyard every summer. When I was twelve, my dad took me with him when he got all his vegetables and let me pick out a few herbs and a small planter. I created my first herb garden and the obsession has continued.
Six years ago I went with my dad to get more herbs to plant in two raised beds. By last year the only plants to survive were three chives. I decided it would be fun to conduct a little science experiment. I uprooted two of the three, split them, then planted them in my herb garden. Holy cow did they explode! I then conducted another science experiment and harvested the seeds from their flowers and started them this spring. To my surprise, they grew! I love seeing my science experiments literally come to life!
I have friends who have all types of gardens, as well. Big gardens, little gardens, vegetable gardens, flower gardens, succulent gardens, indoor plants ALL OVER their houses. I call them (us…) the crazy plant people! The best part about all these crazy plant people is their willingness to share their knowledge, experiences, seeds, and food. Because who doesn’t like fresh food and good conversation with their besties?
What I’m most excited about are the new additions to my garden this year; four more planter boxes. I now have six 4’x8’ planter boxes filled to the brim with vegetables, herbs, and flowers. All of which can be consumed or recycled into my compost pile. I will then use that compost as fertilizer once it reaches its proper point of decomposition. This is two years in the making and I plan to continue adding to my garden every year. At some point it will take up my entire front yard. My husband and I won’t even need to mow our front lawn anymore!
By planting these gardens, we can learn to live sustainably. This is important to our mental and physical health as well as the health of Mother Earth. We can eventually live off of our own food! We’ll be able to save money by eating food from our gardens, store food for winter months, and someday have a small farm stand to sell our goodies to the community. We will be able to use the plants from root to fruit to nourish our bodies and the ecosystem around us. Essentially, there will be minimal to no waste. We are taking small steps daily to do our part to care for Mother Nature while also enriching our lives and diets with healthy, whole foods.
There’s something to be said about all the hard work that goes into gardening. It’s quite rewarding. When you wake up and grab fresh eggs from your chickens, fry them with herbs and veggies from your front yard, and sit down outside to eat a most delicious breakfast while basking in all its glory…you feel that shit in your soul! Pardon my French, but it’s an absolutely indescribable feeling! Which is why I’ve chosen to make gardening and living sustainably a lifestyle.
